Pre-shift briefing template for hospitality teams

Use a free pre-shift briefing template for restaurant, bar, and motel teams. Set the focus, flag pressure points, and give each follow-up an owner.

A short briefing gives the shift a shared plan.

A pre-shift briefing helps a restaurant, bar, or motel team agree on the immediate priority before service begins. It works best when the plan is specific enough for people to act on, and short enough to remember during a busy shift.

Use the template below as a starting point. It is different from a handover: a briefing sets up the shift ahead, while a shift handover transfers open work from one lead to the next.

Copy this pre-shift briefing template.

[What we will do about it]

FOLLOW-THROUGH

BEFORE WE START
Does everyone know the priority, the watch item,
and who to go to for help?

Adapt the focus to the operation.

Restaurant or bar: identify the expected rush, any confirmed menu or stock changes, and who will coordinate when pressure builds. Keep the team’s main priority concrete, such as checking that orders reach the right station.

Independent motel: flag expected arrivals, room readiness questions, and the approved process for unresolved guest requests. Keep private guest details in your business’s approved systems.

Close with a quick check.

Ask the team to repeat the main priority and where to go for help. If the answer is unclear, improve the plan before the shift starts. After service, use one observation to make tomorrow’s briefing more useful.
